American defeats New Hampshire, 74-70

DURHAM, N.H. — Four players finished in double figures as the American University men's basketball team withstood a second-half surge by New Hampshire to claim its first win of the season, 74-70, on Tuesday evening at Lundholm Gym. 

American (1-3) led by as many as 19 (56-37) with 15:30 left in the contest before the Wildcats used a 24-5 run over 8:33 to take a 61-58 lead. The Eagles finished the contest on a 15-9 run and scored the final seven points in the last three minutes to regain the lead and steal the road victory.

Sa'eed Nelson led the Eagles with 26 points in 40 minutes. Nelson grabbed eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win. His biggest contributions came late when he made 3 of 4 from the free throw line.

Larry Motuzis also added a solid performance with 20 points and was a major factor down the stretch with nine straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the contest at 70 with 2:35 left. 

Marvin Bragg scored a season-high 11 points off the bench and shot 5-for-6 from the field after making his first five attempts. Bragg also grabbed three rebounds in 18 minutes of action. 

Sam Iorio had 10 points in 26 minutes and shot 3 of 5 from the field. 

American shot 43 percent from the field, but 29 team fouls allowed the Wildcats to curl up at the line connecting on 29 of 40.

The Eagles led the entire first half and took an 18-point advantage (45-27) on a 3-pointer by Bragg with 2:50 left.
