CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The American University men's basketball team was chosen to finish ninth in the 2017-18 Patriot League Preseason Poll, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Voting was conducted by the coaches and sports information directors who were not allowed to rank their own teams or vote for their own players.

Bucknell received 18 first-place votes and 162 points to top the poll. Boston University for the second straight season was picked second with two first-place votes and 141 points. Navy was picked third with Lehigh and Colgate receiving fourth and fifth place votes and were separated by four points.

Loyola Maryland, Army West Point, Holy Cross, American and Lafayette rounded out the remaining positions from sixth to tenth, respectively.

Bucknell senior center Nana Foulland – the defending Patriot League Men's Basketball Player and Defensive Player of the Year - was selected as the League's preseason player of the year, while highlighting the preseason all-League team, also announced Wednesday. Bison teammate and 2017 Patriot League Tournament Most Valuable Player, senior forward Zach Thomas joins Foulland on the squad, along with Loyola Maryland senior guard Andre Walker. Foulland, Thomas and Walker each earned First Team All-Patriot League honors in 2016-17. Navy senior guard Shawn Anderson and Lehigh senior guard Kahron Ross - both second-team selections last season – round out the preseason all-League team.

American welcomes seven freshmen to the roster along with junior transfers Cheikh 'CB' Diallo and Larry MotuzisSa'eed Nelson returns after a phenomenal rookie season in which he finished third in the NCAA in minutes played (1,135), led the team in scoring (14.9 points per game) and is the only returning player to start in all 30 games. Mark Gasperini is also looking to continue where he left off a year ago. The center finished second in team scoring at 11.9 points per game.

American will open its 2017-18 campaign at Kansas State on Nov. 11.
