Holy Cross Game Notes

WASHINGTON — Three games remain for the American University men's basketball team with one final road appearance on Sunday at Holy Cross. American is looking to complete the two-game sweep of the Crusaders and move two games ahead of them in the standings.

American is sitting in eighth place with six league wins heading into Sunday's contest. The Eagles are a game ahead of Holy Cross and one behind Army West Point — who own the head-to-head tiebreaker — and Loyola (who took the first meeting against AU on Dec. 30. The second game is on Feb. 27).

The Eagles are mathematically out of contention for one of the top three spots and the 10th position.

If American wins its final three games and Navy drops all three, AU could finish as high as fourth but Army West Point and Colgate can't win more than one game.

Junior Charlie Jones tied the game on a three-pointer with 55 seconds remaining in overtime and then won the game with a free throw with two seconds left to lift American over Lafayette 60-59 on Wednesday night at Bender Arena. Jesse Reed led the Eagles with 15 points and had a game-high nine rebounds. Delante Jones had 11 points and seven rebounds and Marko Vasic added five points, eight rebounds and five assists. Charlie Jones finished with six points and six rebounds, which added to the 23 bench points for the Eagles.

American's Jesse Reed had 16 points in the previous meeting with the Crusaders and has been one of the best Eagles against Holy Cross through his career. The Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, native, is averaging 13.8 points per game in eight contests against Lafayette.

Holy Cross guard Cullen Hamilton is the only Crusader to score in double figures twice against the Eagles. The senior had 13 points in his debut against AU on Jan. 19, 2013, a 19-point win for the Eagles. Hamilton is averaging 7.2 points per game in seven appearances against AU.

Head coach Mike Brennan is a perfect 6-0 against Holy Cross in his career. Under Brennan, AU averages 59.5 points per game and allows 50.1. American has won its last seven games against the Crusaders. The Eagles have scored in the 60's twice and have allowed less than 50 points on three occasions with the past meeting the lowest offensive output by HC.

The Crusaders have won one of their last five games and two out their last eight. Of its Patriot League wins, Holy Cross has knocked off Boston U., Colgate, Army West Point, Navy and Lafayette. Robert Champion leads the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game. Malachi Alexander is the best option on the glass at 5.5 rebounds per game and is second in scoring at 10.9. Rookie Karl Charles sits third at 10.3 points per game. Holy Cross' Cullen Hamilton led them with 18 points in the loss to American on Feb. 1 at Bender Arena. The Crusaders held a one-point lead for a short minute before American retained the lead en route to the 13-point win.

Reed led the American University men's basketball team to its fourth straight Patriot League win, 58-45, against Holy Cross on Feb. 1. Reed finished with 16 points to give the Eagles their first home win of the season. Andrija Matic scored a season-best 11 points and James Washington had 10 points.
