WASHINGTON, D.C. – John Schoof scored 23 points and Pee Wee Gardner added 20 to lift American University to an 88-77 victory over Lafayette in a Patriot League men's basketball game Saturday at Bender Arena.
The Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak in improving to 14-12 overall and an even 7-7 in the league. The Leopards dropped to 14-11 and 6-8 in the Patriot League.
Schoof and Gardner each had season-highs in scoring as the Eagles used four players in double figures to record their most points of the season as a team. AU scored a 78-76 victory over Lafayette on Jan. 17 to mark the Eagles' previous team season-high.
Jesse Reed added 19 points, while Kevin Panzer finished with 15 points and a career-best seven assists.
Bryce Scott hit 7 of 8 from 3-point range en route to 24 points for Lafayette, which also put four players in double figures. Nick Lindner had 13 points, with Seth Hinrichs adding a dozen and Dan Trist posting a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
American used a 15-2 run midway through the first half to take a 37-21 lead with 5:58 remaining. Schoof had 17 points by intermission to lead the Eagles to a 45-33 edge. AU hit 59 percent from the floor before halftime.
Lafayette pulled as close as eight points three times in the second half, but the Eagles were solid at the free-throw line down the stretch to earn the win. AU hit 16 of 23 at the line in the second half and went 21-for-30 in the game.
American, which started a stretch of four home games in five dates to close the PL regular season, stays at home on Wednesday to face Boston University in a 7 p.m. matchup.
