WASHINGTON - Men's basketball senior point guard Pee Wee Gardner continued his streak of buzzer-beaters last week, helping American to two victories to earn GEICO AU Student-Athlete of the week honors.
Against Lehigh last Wednesday in D.C., the Mountain Hawks tied the game with nine seconds left. Gardner calmly took the inbounds, dribbled upcourt and drilled the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.8 left on the clock, defeating Lehigh, 62-59.
The Houston, Texas native kept it going on the road at Lafayette on Saturday. The Leopards knotted the score in the final seconds, but again the Eagles gave the ball to Pee Wee. The 5-foot-9 point guard lofted a floater in the lane with 0.3 seconds left to down Lafayette, 78-76.
Gardner set season highs at Lafayette with 19 points and nine assists continuing his three-game streak of baskets in the final seconds of games.
Last week against Colgate, the Eagles trailed by four with 13 seconds left. Pee Wee hit a 3-pointer before a Raider free throw and then scored the game-tying layup with only three seconds left to force overtime. The Eagles would go on to win in double-OT, 71-69.
The "iron men" trio also got special congratulations after the game versus Lehigh, meeting the true "Iron Man," Cal Ripken, Jr., who was in attendance at Bender Arena.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship at Boston U.
