Stony Brook Pushes Past American, 59-47

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The American University men's basketball team concluded nonconference play on Tuesday in Long Island. The Eagles played Stony Brook tough until the final minutes, but the Seawolves' advantage on the boards helped them to a 59-47 victory.

The Eagles shot well from the field, netting 50-percent in the first half and 45 in the game, but Stony Brook outrebounded AU, 36-20, including a 15-3 advantage on the offensive glass. Those extra possessions resulted in seven extra shots and 15 second-chance points for the Seawolves.

"Stony Brook is one of the best rebounding teams in the country and we knew that would be a big factor in tonight's game," said head coach Mike Brennan. "It's something we really have to work on in practice as we get ready for Patriot League play next week."

Three Eagles scored in double figures as Pee Wee Gardner and Jesse Reed each netted 12. Senior John Schoof also added 10 points as American tied a season-high with 17 assists, failing to help on only two shots all night.

AU's offensive execution was not enough to make up the frontcourt strength of Stony Brook as NCAA rebounding-leader Jameel Warney grabbed 12 boards and added 10 points. Guard Carson Puriefoy led the way offensively with 18 points.

The Eagles played back-and-forth with Seawolves for 33 minutes, with a tie game at 42-all, but Stony Brook used a 10-run to pull away for good.

The teams went to the half tied at 25 as all six Eagles who played scored in the initial 20 minutes. It was the first time this season AU entered the break without a team in the lead.

American shot 50 percent both from the field (10-of-20) and from 3-point range (4-of-8) in the first half. The Seawolves were able to make up for AU's shooting, making the most of the offensive glass, getting seven second chance points.

Reed led AU with six rebounds while both he and Gardner dished out a game-high five assists. Junior center Zach Elcano blocked a game-high three points.

The Eagles will take a break for the Christmas holiday before beginning Patriot League play on New Year's Eve at Bucknell.
