After a grueling four-game road trip the American University men's basketball team returned home to Bender Arena on Wednesday night, taking on crosstown foe Howard. The Eagles continued the momentum gained from a 32-point victory at Saint Francis in their last game, rolling to a 76-53 win over the Bison.
Senior big man Tony Wroblicky had a career night, hitting 11-of-12 shots from the field for a personal best 23 points which led all scorers. The fourth-year center also boasted a double-double at halftime and added two assists, a block and three steals.
"It was important for us to get Tony established early tonight and his play really got everyone else jumpstarted," said head coach Mike Brennan. "I was happy with the way we executed our offensive sets. We also were strong defensively, being active and forcing turnovers."
The Eagles, who came in to the game ranked 16th in the nation in scoring defense, held Howard to just 13 points in the first half on 4-of-21 shooting. AU also forced a season high 21 turnovers, registering 10 steals; also a top total for the year.
AU's active defense led to easy baskets for the offense as American shot 56.4 percent from the field.
Junior John Schoof continued his hot shooting, hitting 4-of-8 shots including 3-of-5 from downtown for 13 points after a season high 18 last time out against Saint Francis.
American scored the first basket of the game and did not look back, opening the contest on a 16-4 run to take control. AU led by as much as 25 in the first half, going into the break, up 36-13.
The Eagles owned the advantage in points in the paint 22-8, thanks large in part to Wroblicky. American also spread the ball around as the team registered a season-high 22 assists with nine players scoring.
Rookie Jalen Rhea got hot off the bench in the second half, scoring 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc in just nine minutes.
AU continues its two-game homestand at Bender Arena this Saturday, December 7 at 2 p.m., against Brown. The game airs live in the D.C.-metro area on CSN-plus.
