Men’s Basketball Falls at League-Leading Lehigh, 60-47

American traveled to take on the top team in the Patriot League on Wednesday and despite an off-shooting night the Eagles were tied with Lehigh with just over six minutes to play. The Mountain Hawks used a late run to pull away however, for a 60 -47 victory. Although he was held scoreless in the first half, senior Stephen Lumpkins improved his streak of double-digit scoring games to 23 with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Lehigh (18-5, 8-1 PL) did its damage from beyond the arc, shooting 52.6 percent as a team, hitting 10-of-19 3-pointers, while American (9-15, 4-5 PL) could not find its range for much of the contest, going just 1-of-9 from deep in the first half and finishing 5-of-22 from distance.

Despite the 3-point discrepancy, the Eagles used its advantage on the boards, 40-29, to mount a second-half comeback, even after a Lehigh run to begin the second period.

American trailed by just eight points, 28-20, at the half, but Lehigh scored the first eight points of the second stanza for a 16-point lead.

The Eagles came back with a 9-2 run capped by 3-pointer in the corner from senior Daniel Munoz to make it a single-digit game and after trading treys with Lehigh, AU used a 10-2 run to tie it up on senior Mike Bersch's 3-pointer with 6:11 to go.

From there however, it was all Mountain Hawks as a quick seven-point spurt put Lehigh in control, eventually closing out the game on a 17-4 run.

Sophomore John Schoof, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week and leading 3-point shooter, was held in check by the Mountain Hawks, scoring just five points, but Schoof did hand out a career-high six assists, while grabbing four boards, playing all 40 minutes.

Munoz, junior Tony Wroblicky and senior Blake Jolivette all finished with seven points.

Lehigh was led by Gabe Knutson who scored a game-high 18 points including four 3-pointers.

The Eagles return to Bender Arena on Sunday, February 17, for American's second-to-last home game. AU will take on Holy Cross at noon in a game aired live on the CBS Sports Network. Tickets are still available to this game and to all home games by clicking here or by calling (202) 885-TIXX.
