Hot Shooting Holy Cross Moves Past Men’s Basketball, 79-60
The American University men's basketball team traveled to the Hart Center on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass., and ran into a hot-shooting Patriot League foe as Holy Cross downed the Eagles, 79-60. Senior forward Stephen Lumpkins posted his second-straight double-double, but the Crusaders had five players score in double digits while shooting over fifty percent from the field as a team.
"We did not come out with the energy we needed to matchup with an aggressive team like Holy Cross," said head coach Jeff Jones. "Holy Cross was the aggresor and had that energy all game long and knocked down shots. We need to execute on the defensive end to limit open looks for opponents."
Holy Cross (10-8, 2-1 PL) scored the first basket of the game and pushed ahead to a 14-4 advantage; a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. The Crusaders came out on fire from the field, hitting 13-of-18 shots from the field including 5-of-6 from deep as Holy Cross took a 45-27 lead into the break.
American (6-12, 1-2 PL) looked to rally in the second half and cut a 24-point deficit down to just 11 points after a steal and two-handed, breakaway slam rookie Jesse Reed.
The Crusaders' shooting from distance as well as the inside game of Dave Dudzinski was able to keep the Eagles from getting any closer however.
Dudzinski finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jordan Stevens scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including four 3-pointers.
American was able to keep the speedy Justin Burrell in check offensively, limiting him to three points on 1-of-6 shots from the field, but the second-year guard was able to dish out nine helpers.
Lumpkins led the way for AU with a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Reed played a strong game with 12 points off the bench with two 3-pointers, an assist, no turnovers and a steal.
The Eagles return home to Bender Arena on Wednesday, January 23, at 7 p.m., in a matchup against Patriot League rival Navy. The game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet. Fans can purchase tickets to this game and to all AU home games by clicking here or by calling (202) 885-TIXX.
