Men's Basketball Rolls to 74-50 Victory Over Army
The American University men's basketball team tallied its second consecutive 20+-point win with a 74-50 victory over Army to clinch a home Patriot League quarterfinal game.
Charles Hinkle led the Eagles with 18 points while Troy Brewer and Tony Wroblicky each added 10. Brewer and Hinkle each tallied a team-high seven rebounds and Daniel Munoz posted a career-high 10 assists.
American (18-9, 9-3) went up early before a 9-0 run by the Black Knights gave Army the 15-11 lead with 11:16 left to play. Wroblicky ended the run with a jumper and a three-point play from Brewer put the Eagles back on top, 16-15, with 9:41 remaining.
A three from Blake Jolivette off a dish from Munoz gave American the 23-21 advantage, and the Eagles ended the half on a 7-2 run to take a 30-25 lead into the intermission.
Wroblicky led the Eagles with eight points in the first half and Hinkle added seven as the team shot 52.0 percent from the field. Brewer, Hinkle and Wroblicky each added four boards and Munoz tallied five assists. Ella Ellis led the Black Knights with 10 points in the first half as the team shot 30.8 percent from the field.
Army (12-15, 5-7) kept it tight to start the second half before American went up 41-31 on consecutive baskets from Brewer and Riley Grafft with 14:13 remaining. The Eagles went on a 17-4 run over the next six minutes of play to take the 58-38 lead with 6:56 left.
The Black Knights were never able to cut American's lead to less than 18 points in the closing minutes. American took its largest lead of the game off a three-pointer from Munoz, 74-48, with 1:29 to play. A lay-up from Jordan Springer closed out the scoring for the 74-50 final score.
American shot a season-high 60.4 percent from the field and went 7-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Eagles outrebounded the Black Knights by a 33-25 margin in the game.
Ellis was the only double-digit scorer for Army as he posted a team-high 16 points and four players recorded four boards apiece. Army was held to 32.7 percent shooting from the field and 14.3 percent from three-point range.
American will close out the regular season with back-to-back home games. The Eagles will host Bucknell on Thursday, February 23 at 7 p.m. followed by Lafayette on Saturday, February 25 at 4 p.m. Tickets are still available for both games and can be purchased by clicking here or by calling (202) 885-TIXX.
