The American University men's basketball team will face defending Patriot League Champion Bucknell for the top of the Patriot League standings on Wednesday, January 25. Bucknell is undefeated so far this season in conference play and the Eagles are ranked second with a 4-1 record. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from Sojka Pavilion.
The Eagles picked up their third straight win to remain a perfect 9-0 in Bender Arena with a 67-55 victory over the Army Black Knights on Saturday. Troy Brewer led the Eagles with 22 points and went 6-of-8 from three-point range while Tony Wroblicky also scored in double-digits with a career-high 12 points. Wroblicky went 5-of-7 from the floor and also posted a team-high nine rebounds. Daniel Munoz tallied six assists and two steals in the game.
The Eagles went on an 8-0 run early in the game for the 20-10 lead with 3:06 remaining in the first half. A jumper from Milton Washington stopped American's run, but American outscored Army 6-2 in the closing minutes of the first half for the 26-14 lead heading into the break.
American went on a 14-2 run with just over six minutes remaining in the game with back-to-back three's from Brewer to take the 64-40 lead. Army hit five three's in the closing minutes of the second half and went on a 15-3 run, but it wasn't enough as American held on for the 67-55 win.
The Eagles shot 47.2 percent from the field and 50.0 perfect from three-point range. American outrebounded Army by a 37-29 margin in the game. Army was held to a 35.3 percent field goal percentage and went 11-of-24 from beyond the arc.
Bucknell owns an overall record of 15-6 and has won 15 straight games against Patriot League opponents, the second-longest winning streak against conference opponents in the nation. The Bison extended their win streak with a 75-41 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday as Mike Muscala recorded his 10th double-double of the season in the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Cameron Ayers led the Bison with 13 points.
Muscala is ranked fifth in the Patriot League with 15.6 ppg and leads the conference with 9.2 rpg. He is also ranked second in the Patriot League with 1.7 bpg. Joe Willman leads the Patriot League with his 53.6 percent field goal percentage while Ayers is first with his 52.7 percent three-point field goal percentage.
This is the 50th all-time meeting between American and Bucknell, with the Bison holding the 29-20 advantage and a 17-6 advantage when playing in Lewisburg, Pa. Bucknell has won each of the last four meetings between the two teams.
The game opens a three-game road trip for the Eagles. All of the games will be broadcast live on Patriot League All-Access.
