The American University men's basketball team will open Patriot League play on Saturday, January 7 at 2 p.m. against Colgate as they look to return to the Patriot League Tournament for the 11th straight year. The Eagles will also look to continue its six-game win streak at home this season and perfect 13-0 record against the Raiders in Bender Arena.
American (9-6) bounced back from a loss at Mount St. Mary's with a 70-61 victory over Brown in its final non-conference game of the season. Charles Hinkle led the team on both ends of the floor posting a game-high 25 points and team-high seven rebounds. Blake Jolivette and Daniel Munoz each notched 10 points. Munoz added a team-high seven assists.
Hinkle scored 12 of the Eagles' first 15 points highlighted by a rare four-point play as American took a 10-point lead just seven minutes into the first half. The Eagles continued to roll as Hinkle, Troy Brewer and Riley Grafft added buckets to put the Eagles up 23-10 with 8:46 left to play in the half. Jean Harris added a three in the final minute as American went into the half with the 35-26 lead.
American opened the second half with a 12-0 run and went up by as many as 21 before a 9-2 run by Brown cut American's lead to 57-46. The Bears got it down to a single-digit deficit, 59-50, the first since the end of the first half, off a Andrew McCarthy lay-up with 4:07 left. The Eagles converted on nine of 10 free throws down the stretch to hold on and snap its four-game losing streak.
The Eagles shot 55.8 percent from the field in the game and 66.7 percent from three-point range. The Eagles were almost perfect from the charity stripe, going 16-of-17. American outrebounded the Bears by a 30-27 margin. Brown was 41.0 percent from the field and 31.0 percent from three-point range.
Colgate has posted a 5-9 record in non-conference play this season and are 1-7 on the road. The Raiders will be looking to rebound from its fourth-straight loss to Columbia, 66-59.
Pat Moore leads Colgate with 10.9 ppg and is shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 78.9 percent from the foul line. Mitch Rolls is second in the Patriot League with a three-point field goal percentage of 47.2 this season and is averaging 10.1 ppg. Nick Pascale leads the Raiders with 5.8 rpg.
American holds a 20-5 series lead over the Colgate Raiders, and a 20-4 record since joining the Patriot League. The Eagles hold a perfect 13-0 record when playing in Bender Arena.
