Four Double-Digit Scorers Lead Men's Basketball to Eighth Straight Win; Watch Highlights

The American University men's basketball team won its eighth straight game and sixth straight in Bender Arena on Wednesday, defeating Hampton, 74-72, as four players scored in double-digits for the second time this season.

Charles Hinkle led the Eagles with 24 points, going 5-for-9 from beyond the arc and adding four rebounds, as Troy Brewer had 19 points. Daniel Munoz and Simon McCormack each had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Tony Wroblicky recorded three blocks for American as Munoz had a team-high three steals.

Hinkle opened the game with tre just 30 seconds in as John Schoof and Brewer each added one as well to give the Eagles the 9-6 advantage with 16:55 to play. Hampton took the lead off a Darrion Pellum lay-up before he was able to get a steal and the dunk for the 19-16 advantage. Hinkle hit another three-pointer as McCormack added two straight to give the Eagles back the lead, 28-22, with 7:51 remaining in the half.

American (8-2) took the nine-point lead as Hinkle drained his fourth three of the game with 7:02 to play in the first, 31-22. Munoz added a three to put the Eagles up 11 but Christopher Tolson answered with a deep three of his own to cut it back to eight, 38-30, with 3:21 left in the game. Tolson hit another three and a jump floater to take American's lead to three, but Munoz added a lay-up with 45 seconds to play to give the Eagles the 40-35 advantage to end the first half.

Hinkle led the Eagles with 15 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the first. Brewer added seven points and posted a team-high three rebounds. American shot 57.1 percent from the field and 70.0 percent from three-point range in the first half. Hampton was 55.6 percent from the field as Pellum recorded a team-high 11 points. Orin O'Bryant had two rebounds in the first to lead the Pirates.

Hampton (4-6) opened the half with an easy lay-up from Agbelese under the basket but Brewer answered with a three from the top of the key to keep the Eagles up six with 18:37 to play, 43-37. American went on a 9-2 run over the next two minutes, 53-43. Aaron Austin would hit a pair of buckets, 60-53, before Hinkle and Bruce would trade tre's to take American's lead to seven with 7:19 left, 65-58.

The Pirates would cut it to a one-point game off a Mike Tuitt three, but a Brewer jump floater would give American back the three-point lead with 3:38 remaining, 67-64. Brewer would add a three to give the Eagles back a six-point cushion before Pellum would answer with five straight points to bring it back to a two-point game, 70-68, with 1:15 left. Tuitt hit another two to bring it within one, 73-72, but Brewer would end the game going 1-of-2 from the line with 0.3 seconds remaining, 74-72.

American shot 48.9 percent in the game and 47.8 percent from three-point range. The team was also 58.6 percent from the line. Hampton was 50.8 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles held the advantage in rebounds (33-25), assists (16-15) and blocks (3-2). Pellum led all scorers with 25 points as Bruce added 14 for the Pirates.

The Eagles will begin a five-game road trip on Saturday, December 10 at 7 p.m. when they travel to St. Francis (Pa.).
