Men's Basketball Looks to Continue Win Streak Against Hampton
The American University men's basketball team will host Hampton on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to conclude its four-game homestand. The Eagles will look to extend their win streak and perfect 5-0 record at home.
American (7-2) picked up its seventh consecutive win for the first time since the 2008-09 season with a 66-60 victory over St. Joseph's. Reigning ECAC Co-Player and Patriot League Player of the Week Charles Hinkle had a career-high 32 points to lead the Eagles.
Hinkle was 5-of-9 from beyond the arc and 10-of-16 from the field, shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. The senior also posted a career-high eight rebounds. Troy Brewer scored in double-digits for the Eagles as well, adding 12 points and leading the team with four assists, also notching four boards and two steals.
St. Joseph's jumped out to an early lead, before Brewer was able to tie the game at 15 apiece with 11:53 to play. American was able to go on a 12-4 run to take the 27-19 lead off a Hinkle three. A jumper from C.J. Aiken cut it to eight, 36-28, with 44.2 seconds to play before Blake Jolivette hit a two to end the half, 38-28.
American shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half and 46.2 percent beyond the arc as Hinkle led the team with 17 points in the first half. St. Joseph's shot 48.0 percent from the field.
The Eagles opened the half with a three from Hinkle, 41-28, before St. Joseph's answered back with a tre of their own, 41-31. The Hawks went on a 20-8 run over the next eight minutes to tie it at 51 apiece with 7:55 to play. St. Joseph's would cut it to three off a lay-up from Halil Kanacevic but a Brewer dunk and one after a foul on the play would secure American's seventh straight win, 66-60.
American shot 43.1 percent in the game from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. St. Joseph's was 42.4 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from three-point range on the day.

Darrion Pellum led the Pirates with 14 points in the game as David Bruce recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Pellum leads Hampton with 18.8 ppg. Bruce has recorded 10.3 ppg and a team-high 8.8 rpg this season.
The Pirates are led by Edward Joyner, Jr., who is in his third year as the head coach of Hampton. He led the team to the 2011 MEAC Tournament Championship last season and an 11-5 record in conference play. The team had an overall record of 24-9, the first 20-win season for the Pirates since their 2001-02 season.
