The American University men's basketball team will travel to Columbia on Saturday to take on the Lions after defeating Florida Atlantic, 62-56, in its home opener on Wednesday, November 16.
Charles Hinkle has led the Eagles in scoring this year and is averaging 24.0 ppg. He scored a career-high 27 against Florida Atlantic on Wednesday and has hit 27-of-30 from the foul line. Troy Brewer is averaging 13.7 ppg and has shot 45.0 percent from beyond the arc. Tony Wroblicky leads the team defensively with 8.7 rpg. He recorded seven blocks on Wednesday, which places him fifth all-time at American for blocks in a single game.
The Eagles went on a 9-0 run to end the first half in their last game against Florida Atlantic, with Blake Jolivette hitting a three at the buzzer to put the Eagles up 27-18. American shot 34.5 percent from the field in the first, with Florida Atlantic shooting 25.0 percent. Hinkle led the Eagles with 13 points as Jolivette added seven and Brewer had five. Wroblicky led the team with six rebounds and three blocks.
Florida Atlantic scored the only points in the first five and a half minutes of the second half, 27-20, before Daniel Munoz added a pull-up jumper just inside the three-point line, 29-22 at 14:03. The teams traded points before a Hinkle dunk was able to give the Eagles the momentum and the 39-30 lead with 9:13 remaining, as he also hit a free throw after being fouled on the play.
The Owls were able to bring it back within four with 4:30 remaining before a Jolivette jumper took American's lead back to seven, 45-39. Florida Atlantic would add two to bring the score to 61-56, before Daniel Fisher ended the game with a free throw to put the final score at 62-56.
American shot 37.0 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from the free throw line, as the Owls shot 36.1 percent. Florida Atlantic out-rebounded the Eagles, 45-32, but American held the advantage in blocks (8-5) and steals (8-5).
American is 3-2 all-time against Columbia. The teams are tied when playing in the Levien Gymnasium. The Eagles picked up their only win in New York in 2008, where they walked away with the 69-56 victory. Columbia enters the season after a pair of losses to Connecticut, 70-57, and Furman, 62-58.
Last season, Columbia won 64-62 in Bender Arena on November 28, 2010. The Lions came back from a 14-point deficit in the second half to win after hitting a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining. Stephen Lumpkins finished with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Lumpkins was 8-of-13 from the field and added three blocks. Troy Brewer scored 18 points and was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc while Simon McCormack chipped in a season-high 13 points.
