American University Head Coach Jeff Jones has announced the addition of Charles Hinkle to the men's basketball team. Hinkle, a native of Los Alamitos, Calif., joins the Eagles after transferring from Vanderbilt University.
The 6-5 guard appeared in 10 games as a sophomore for the Commodores this season, helping Vanderbilt to an 8-3 record before transferring. As a freshman, Hinkle appeared in 25 games and helped the Commodores to a 19-12 overall record and an 8-8 mark in SEC play. He scored a career-high seven points against St. Francis (Pa.) that season and netted five points against Alabama in the SEC Tournament.
Hinkle averaged 16.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg and 2.1 apg in one season playing at Hebron Academy in Maine. As a senior at Los Alamitos High School, Hinkle averaged 10.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg to help guide the Griffins to a 29-5 overall record, the school's first sectional championship and an appearance in the California state semifinals. He was also a two-time All-Sunset League selection while playing at Los Alamitos.
"We are pleased to have Charles joining the American University family," Jones commented. "Through the recruiting process out of prep school, we know that Charles is an outstanding young man who will make positive contributions to the American community."
Due to NCAA transfer regulations, Hinkle will not be eligible for competition until after the fall 2010 semester.
