The American University men's basketball team will open its 2009-10 campaign on Tuesday, November 3, against Randolph-Macon in an exhibition game at Bender Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday will be the first chance for American fans to see the new look Eagles, led by junior guard Nick Hendra and sophomore forward Stephen Lumpkins. Hendra, the team's leading returning scorer (6.3 ppg) and rebounder (4.4 ppg), will be looked upon to provide steady offensive production this season. Lumpkins, meanwhile, will be looked at to improve upon his impressive freshman campaign in which he averaged 3.4 ppg and 2.6 rpg under the basket. Junior forward Vlad Moldoveanu will be eligible to begin playing on December 16 at DePaul after transferring from George Mason midway through last season. The 6'9" forward possesses the ability to shoot from the outside and also has the size and strength to be effective in the post.
Joining Hendra in the backcourt will be senior Matthew Wilson, junior Steve Luptak and sophomores Joe Hill and Simon McCormack. Sophomore forward Riley Grafft will join Lumpkins and Moldoveanu in the frontcourt. American has also added seven freshman to this season's squad who will each compete for playing time immediately.
