AU Athletics Hosts 18th Annual Eagles Club Golf Classic

June 20, 2008

WASHINGTON - The American University Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted its 18th annual Eagles Club Golf Classic on Monday, June 16, at the Bretton Woods Country Club in Germantown, Md. Over 128 AU alums, donors and supporters participated in the scramble helping to make this year's fundraiser a record-setting event.

"I would like to thank everyone who played and all of the great sponsors who helped support the event for making this year's golf outing the most successful to date," Associate Athletics Director for Development and Special Events David Bierwirth said. "The Eagles Club Golf Classic is a special occasion for the athletics department and is a unique opportunity for supporters of all 16 of our athletic teams to come together, interact, build relationships, and ultimately help to enrich the college experience for all our student-athletes."

During play, participants were greeted around the course by AU coaches and staff members and enjoyed several contests including longest drive, nearest to the pin and hole-in-one while also competing for a team title. This year's winning foursome was Glenn Kikuchi, Ray Bettwy, Greg Calvitt and Ken Webb, who finished eight-under par through 12 holes as the event was cut short due to severe thunderstorms.

Mother Nature forced golfers into the clubhouse just in time to watch Tiger Woods claim the U.S. Open in sudden death over Rocco Mediate. Participants also enjoyed dinner along with a silent auction and raffle drawings.
