WASHINGTON - The American University men's cross country team repeated for the sixth-consecutive year as the Patriot League Cross Country Champion Saturday morning, edging out the U.S. Naval Academy who finished a very close second. The women's team also competed strongly in its championship race and placed fourth, tying its highest finish since winning the title in 2003.
The men's team finished with a total of 47 points and just ahead of second place Navy who finished with 48. All five scorers for the Eagles finished in the race's top-20 and were led by senior Brendan Fennell who repeated as the PL Cross Country Individual Champion. Fennell ran the 8k course in a season best time of 25 minutes even to capture his second individual crown. Classmate Steve Hallinan was the race's second-place finisher and completed the course in a time of 25:21.50. Hallinan had previously been AU's top finisher in each event he competed in and was the 2005 PL individual champion. American's other scorers included junior Carlos Jamieson who placed 12th in a time of 26:31.00, senior Brian McCabe who placed 15th with a time of 26:40.40 and freshman Kyle Gaffney who came in 17th in 26:48.70.

The women's team placed fourth in its championship event and tied its highest finish at the conference meet since winning it in 2003. Cathleen Ford led the Eagle harriers with a second place finish and a time of 21:12.30. Kate Lilley also placed in the top-10 for AU and finished seventh in a time of 21:44.40. American's other scorers in the 6k race were Greta Wicklund who finished 28th in 22:43.20, Meghan Mason who placed 34th in 22:54.50 and Melissa Tabas who finished in 43rd place in 23:11.90.
Select Eagles will continue their cross country season at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet being held in Bethlehem, Pa., in two weeks on Nov. 10.
