AU Cross Country in Action at Navy Invitational

WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's cross country teams were both in action Saturday at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. Freshman Octavia Rinehardt ran to a 10th-place finish to lead the women's team while senior Carlos Jamieson finished first for the men's team in 20th place.

Jamieson made his 2008 debut at the meet and completed the 8k course in a time of 26:05.00 to place 20th. He was followed at the finish line by freshman Josh Olsen who ran a 26:52.00 for 38th place and sophomore Conor Sullivan in 27:06.80 for 44th place. Also competing for the men's team on Saturday were sophomore Colin Eustis (28:19.70, 83rd) and junior Garrett Martucci (29:02.10, 102nd). With the exception of Jamieson, this was the first career 8k race for each of AU's runners.

For the second straight meet, Rinehardt was the Eagles top finisher on the women's side and placed 10th in a time of 23:18.00. Junior Greta Wicklund took 27th place in the race in 24:10.00. Joining Rinehardt and Wicklund on the starting line Saturday were junior Rachel Forcino (26:52.00, 93rd) and freshmen Lauren Scholl (29:07.00, 135th), Caitlin Prichard (29:21.96, 138th) and sophomore Tara Jakubik (30:11.00, 145th).

Both the men's and women's fields at this year's Navy Invitational were among the largest in meet history. A total of 15 teams and 149 runners competed in the men's race while the women's race hosted 16 teams and 216 runners. AU finished ninth overall in both the men's and women's team scoring.

AU will be out of action for the next two weeks before competing in the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's race scheduled to start immediately after.
