WASHINGTON - Junior Matthew Rainey took the reins for the American University men's cross country team on Saturday, leading the team to a third-place overall finish to earn the third GEICO AU Student-Athlete of the Week honor of 2017.
Rainey battled with the lead pack throughout the majority of the race, eventually crossing for third in the field with a new personal record of 24:41.50 over 8,000-meters. That time knocks 21-seconds off of his previous best from the Princeton Invitational last year. This is the fourth time in Rainey's career that he guided the squad on the cross country course after he took the helm during the last three meets of 2016.
The Eagles will have a couple of weeks of recovery and training before hitting the course again on Friday, Sept. 29, with the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
