WASHINGTON – Two American University cross country women will take to the line for one more round of postseason competition, as freshman Arianna Lopez and sophomore Adriana Hooks travel to University Park, Pa., for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Championship on Friday. Hosted by Penn State, the women's 6,000m race will go off at noon, followed by the men's 10,000m at 1 p.m.
The regional championships serve as qualifiers into the NCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., later this month. The top two teams from each race, and the top four individuals not on those teams, will automatically advance on to the national championship competition.
Hooks has been a consistent leader for the Eagles throughout her sophomore campaign. She kicked the season off with a fourth place finish at the Mount St. Mary's Duals, improving on her 5,000m best from 2015 with an 18:24.70 crossing. She shaved off another 14-seconds two weeks later at the Panorama Farms Invitational, finishing in 18:10.0.
Her next PR came during the Princeton Invitational, where she navigated the first 6,000m course of the season in 21:58.20. She narrowly missed that time at the Patriot League Championships, where she earned a Second Team All-Patriot honor after taking ninth in the field (22:01.50).
Consistency has also been the theme for Lopez, who has been the Eagles' No. 2 finisher in her debut season. She enters the meet with a top time of 22:39.60 for 6,000m.
