American sophomore Brendan Johnson earned the men's individual title Friday at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals, covering the course in 14:56.72.
Johnson finished 12 seconds ahead of Mitchell Pratt of Navy to earn the victory. He was third at the same meet a year ago.
The Eagles men finished with a 1-2 record in the dual-meet scoring between the four teams. AU beat the host Mountaineers 17-40, but lost to Navy 25-31 and UMBC 22-37.
Freshman Samuel Doud also earned a top-10 finish, placing seventh overall in 15:35.18. Freshmen James Belfatto (15:53.23) and Alaeldin Tirba (15:53.46) finished 14th and 15th, with junior Bernard Skomal in 23rd at 16:15.84.
On the women's side, AU went 1-3 in the round-robin scoring between five schools competing. The Eagles beat the Mount 24-31, but lost to Maryland (22-39), Navy (18-45) and UMBC (18-43).
Sophomore Corina Velazco was eighth overall for the AU women, finishing in 18:23.75. Julienne DeVita also cracked the top 25, placing 24th in 19:05.63.
Kelseagh Budris (44th, 19:41.41), Olivia DiBiasio (54th, 20:10.98) and Cassidy Hart (67th, 22:54.94) also scored for the AU women.
American competes next Friday at the Bill Dellinger Invitational at the University of Oregon.
