Eagles Open Cross Country Season at Mount Duals

Eagles Open Cross Country Season at Mount Duals

American University's cross country teams head to their traditional season-opening venue on Friday when the Eagles run in the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals in Emmitsburg.

The men's race begins at 1 p.m., with the women's 5K to follow.

The Mount has been hosting the event nearly ever year since 2004. With a strong distance program, American has been able to gain some early season success through the years.

Senior Nick Regan was the individual champion a year ago, leading six Eagles in the top 10. He was followed by John Pope, who graduated, and Brendan Johnson, who earned Rookie of the Year honors in the Patriot League last season as a freshman.

The Eagles went 3-0 in the men's dual-meet scoring, earning first place in the meet.

AU has won the last four men's team titles in a row.

AU's women's team went 2-3 in the scoring last season, finishing fourth in the standings. Sophomore Corina Velazco is the top returning finisher for the Eagles on the women's side, having placed in this event 15th last year.

AU has five women's titles in the 5K Duals, the most of any school that has participated. Navy won the team championship a year ago, its fourth in the event.
