WASHINGTON - American University seniors Steve Hallinan and Kate Lilley have been named the Patriot League Male and Female Runners of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. Hallinan and Lilley both posted conference top times on their way to victories in the men's and women's 1500 meter invitational on Friday at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
Hallinan placed first in the men's 1500 meter invite by less than half a second margin, holding off Yale's Jared Bell for the victory. Hallinan finished the race in a career best time of 3:44.28. Hallinan's time surpassed Army's John Mickowski's time of 3:47.19, ran just last week at the Auburn Tiger Classic, for the top 1500 meter time in the PL this season. The time also automatically qualifies Hallinan for the NCAA East Regional Meet, a qualifier for the NCAA Championships, and is the third-fastest time ever posted by an AU runner in the event.
Lilley earned the victory in the women's 1500 meter invite with a time of 4:31.98 and nearly a full second margin between her and the second-place finisher, Priscilla Jennings from Millersville. Lilley's performance in the race earned her the top spot in the PL, as she overtook teammate Cathleen Ford who held the conference's previous top time of 4:37.99. Lilley's time also moved her from sixth to third on AU's all-time list.
The awards are the first outdoor track and field weekly honors for both Hallinan and Lilley this season.
