March 29, 2008
WASHINGTON - Several members of the American University men's and women's track teams competed in the Adidas Raleigh Relays on Day One led by senior Brendan Fennell who set a new school record in the men's 5000 meter run. Senior Cathleen Ford, junior Carlos Jamieson and the men's 4x1500 meter relay team also ran at the event hosted by North Carolina State University.
Fennell broke the school record in the 5000 meter with a first-place time of 13:51.67. Fennell edged out Chris Lukezic of the Reebok Track Club who finished in 13:52.60 for the win. Jamieson also ran in the 5000 meter, taking ninth place in 14:08.54 for the second-fastest time in program history.
Fennell's record time toped the previous school record of 14:02.53, a time which he also set. Jamieson's time in the event moved him into second place all-time at AU, ahead of Gary Cohen's time of 14:09.64 set in 1973. Fennell's win is his third in three weeks after having also won the 1500 meter run at last week's Navy Invite and the 3000 meter run at the Coastal Carolina Invite.
Ford placed 11th in the women's 5000 meter and moved from fifth place to fourth on AU's all-time list with a time of 17:14.31. Ford's time bested her previous personal record of 17:47.74 and put her ahead of Jen Baclawski on the all-time list who ran a 17:35.41 in the event in 2003. Maria Elena Calle who ran unattached won the race with a 16:29.26.
Seniors Steve Hallinan and Brian McCabe teamed up with freshmen Kyle Gaffney and Conor Sullivan in the men's 4x1500 meter relay and placed fourth in 15:35.59. Eastern Kentucky finished less than two seconds ahead of AU's team and won the event with a 15:33.64.
Hallinan and McCabe will return to the track on Saturday, March 29, in the 800 meter run while senior Kate Lilley will run in the women's 1500 meter.
