April 24, 2008

WASHINGTON - American University seniors Kate Lilley and Cathleen Ford were in action in the women's 3000 meter run Thursday at the Penn Relays hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Both runners posted personal records as Lilley placed fourth and Ford placed 11th.

Lilley and Ford both broke the 10:00 barrier in the event, a feat neither had previously accomplished. Lilley ran a 9:47.40 to fourth place while Ford finished in 9:53.62 for 11th. Princeton's Liz Costello won the event with a time of 9:35.01.

Lilley remains third on AU's all-time list with her new PR but improved by more than 16 seconds on her previous best of 10:03.42 which she also ran this year. Ford moves from 10th on the all-time list to fourth as her new PR bested her previous mark of 10:48.65 ran in 2006 by 55 seconds.

AU will return to the track at the Penn Relays on Saturday, April 26, when the men's 4 x mile team of seniors Brendan Fennell, Steve Hallinan, Brian McCabe and junior Carlos Jamieson is in action.
