FAIRFAX, Va. - The American University track & field team continued rewriting the record books on Saturday as the Eagles earned 13 personal records (PR) and three AU all-time top-ten marks at the George Mason Spring Invitational. American also came away with a pair of event wins as juniors Ben Doiron and Adriana Hooks led the men's and women's 5000-meter fields, respectively.
Most of the highlights came out of the men's and women's 1500m runs, however, as seven of the eight AU men and women earned new career-bests. Leading the way was senior Brianna Belo and junior Matthew Rainey, who led the AU squads with new program all-time top-ten times. Belo jumped up to No. 5 in the record book with her 4:31.69 PR while Rainey landed at sixth in program history with his 3:45.70 finish.
That time puts Rainey within qualification into the NCAA East Regional Championship as he now ranks 33rd in the region. He joins Belo and junior Adriana Hooks as three of AU's likely qualifiers into the regional championship meet, which accepts the top-48 marks in each event after the conclusion of the conference championships. Hooks is currently 42nd in the region with her 10,000m performance from the Raleigh Relays (35:45.81) while Belo ranks 24th with her 2:07.52 school record in the 800m run from last weekend.
Other PR's from the 1500m run include senior Alaeldin Tirba (3:48.72), freshman Chris Tibbetts (4:00.66) and sophomore Faolan Coogan Pluck (4:04.33) on the men's side, and sophomore Arianna Lopez (4:41.78) and junior Kassidy Ayres (4:55.84) on the women's.
Junior Chia-Ry Chang Urena earned the day's third and final record book performance with a 1:01.91 PR in the women's 400m dash, ranking ninth in program history.
Sophomore Kaitlyn McTernan laid down a big kick to win the fifth section of the women's 800m and place 19th overall with a PR of 2:19.14, falling a mere 0.13-seconds shy of making it into the program's top-ten.
Junior Trevor Patton earned a pair of PR's during his four-event day. He opened with a second-place finish in the men's long jump with a top mark of 6.85m (22-5.75), good for a season's best. He followed that up with a 51.02 PR in the 400m dash and 11.44 PR in the 100m dash. He also took to the track for the 200m dash, where he ran a wind-aided 22.88.
HEAR FROM COACH SEAN GRAHAM...
"Today was a great day for track, and our athletes capitalized on it with big PR's in almost every race. I'm very happy with how the team came out to compete and race at the next level - that's what we've been working for all season. Most notably, Matthew Rainey lowering his 1500m PR again, this time down to 3:45, which has historically qualified for the First Round of the NCAA Championship. This sets the team up well as we prepare to enter championship season in the coming weeks."
