@AU_TrackField Splits for Two-Meet Weekend

Adriana Hooks at 2017 Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships

WASHINGTON – The American University track & field teams will divide and conquer this weekend as seven Eagles travel to the Adidas Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State, and another 22 head to Annapolis for the Navy Invitational.

The weekend will open on Friday morning with the women's 5,000-meter run at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility in Raleigh, N.C. Freshman Shelbi Wuss will be the sole AU representative in the event as she makes her outdoor 5k debut after opening the season with the 3000m steeplechase at the Shamrock Invitational two weeks ago.

Junior Ben Doiron and senior Alaeldin Tirba will take the track next in their 5k season debuts. Doiron opened the season with a 3000m personal record (PR) at the Shamrock Invitational, leading the field in 8:29.53 while Tirba opened his with a third-place finish in the mile (4:13.07).

Junior Matthew Rainey will look to bump into AU's all-time top-ten list in the 1500m run on Friday after falling a mere 0.02-seconds during his PR performance last season (3:49.06). Classmate Adriana Hooks will close the day with her career debut in the women's 10,000m run.

Seniors Brianna Belo and Liam Purdy feature in Saturday's events as both are set to take the line in the 800m run. Belo is the AU school record holder in the event with her 2:07.53 PR from last season while Purdy holds the seventh-fastest time in program history on the men's side with his 1:51.70 PR from 2017.

The majority of the team will travel to nearby Annapolis, Md., on Saturday for the Navy Spring Invitational. Events will begin at noon with freshman Nadia Stratton's first career 3000m steeplechase. Freshman Max Lustig and junior Tommy Sommer will follow in the men's 3k steeplechase. This will be an event debut for Lustig while Sommer will look to improve on his 10:14.06 performance from the Shamrock Invitational.

Junior Trevor Patton will be the sole AU competitor in the field events as he continues the hunt for the school record in the men's long jump. Patton is No. 2 on the all-time top ten list for AU with his 6.86m (22-6.25) PR. He will also be featured in a pair of events on the track with the 400m and 200m dashes later in the day.
