Men's 4x800m Claims Patriot League Title on Day One of Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The American University track and field team closed the first day of the Patriot League Outdoor Championships on Friday with yet another 4x800m title after the Eagles repeated their winning performance from the indoor season.  The team will be back in action at Lehigh's Goodman Track & Field Complex on Saturday for the final day of competition.

The men's 4x800m was certainly the highlight of the day, as junior Alaeldin Tirba, sophomore Ben Doiron, sophomore Matthew Rainey and junior Liam Purdy landed back atop the podium with their 7:34.64 winning performance.  For Tirba, Rainey and Purdy, this was familiar territory as the three were also members of the first-place team during the indoor PL Championships.

The squad entered the weekend after hitting the sixth-fastest DMR time in program history during last weekend's Penn Relays (9:55.18).  They now add their names to another all-time top ten list with the eighth-fastest 4x800m time in AU history (7:34.64).

Also notching a couple of points for the men's team was sophomore Trevor Patton, who closed the long jump competition in seventh with a top mark of 6.71m (22-0.25).

The AU women also saw their first competition of the weekend Friday afternoon, as the young crew of sophomore Adriana Hooks and freshmen Kaitlyn McTernan, Emily Houghton and Arianna Lopez placed tenth in the 4x800m (9:38.75).

Events will resume at 1:35 p.m. on Saturday with Lopez returning to the track alongside freshman Katelyn Deibler, junior Jude Mabone and sophomore Kailee Traficante in the women's 1500m run.

McTernan and Houghton will also return after the 4x800m, joining sophomore Sammie Paul in the 800m run, while Hooks will highlight the 5000m run field.

All four 4x800m men are also slated to reappear on Saturday, starting with Purdy and Rainey in the men's 800m run.  Doiron and Tirba will take the line alongside freshman Gerard D'Ambrosio and sophomore Tommy Sommer in the men's 5000m run.
