Belo Wins in Record Fashion at Colonial Relays

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Brianna Belo continued her record-breaking junior campaign on Friday, March 31, as she surpassed her own 800m run school record en route to her second consecutive event win of the season.  Junior Liam Purdy and sophomore Adriana Hooks joined Belo with personal record marks of their own during the second of three days at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.

Already one of the best middle distance runners to ever pass through the program, Belo continued to solidify her position in the AU record books during the indoor season with school records in the 500m dash (1:12.63), 800m run (2:11.41) and 1000m run (2:50.90).  She started her outdoor season in a similar fashion, just missing out on her own record mark in the 800m (2:08.23) during the Navy Invitational, where she crossed for her first win of the season in 2:09.67.  Now, in only the third meet of her outdoor campaign, Belo has cruised through that record mark with her 2:07.53 finish at the Colonial Relays, currently one of the top ten times in the NCAA and No. 5 in the East Region.

Record marks continued to fall throughout the rest of the evening's events, starting with junior Liam Purdy who timed through his third PR in as many meets this season.  He was fourth across the line in the 800m run and added his name to the AU history books with the seventh-fastest time in school history at 1:51.70.

Sophomore Adriana Hooks closed the day with her season debut in the 5000m run, breaking through the coveted 17-minute barrier for the first time in her career with a 16:59.13 finish for seventh in the field.  Hooks already held the fifth-fastest time in school history with her freshman PR (17:10.46), but now moves into the No. 4 slot midway through the 2017 season.

Other performances for the day include sophomore Matthew Rainey, who placed 13th in the 800m run (1:52.90), and junior Alaeldin Tirba, who took 16th in the 1500m run (3:54.99).

The meet will continue on Saturday as four Eagle men are set to take on the 4x1500m relay at 3:10 p.m. in Williamsburg.  For the latest on American Track & Field, stay tuned to and follow the team on Twitter @AU_TrackXC.
