Track & Field Set to go Back-to-Back at Navy

WASHINGTON - The men and women of American University track & field will be in Annapolis, Md., this weekend for a pair of back-to-back competitions at Navy on Saturday, March 25.  The men will lead off with the Navy Spring Invitational from 10 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., followed by the women's Navy Open from noon to 4:15 p.m.

The Eagles return to the track after opening their 2017 outdoor campaign at the Maryland Spring Invitational last weekend.  Junior Liam Purdy and sophomore Matthew Rainey highlighted the day's events with a pair of personal records (PR's) out of the men's 1500m run.  Purdy led the field with a new career-best 3:51.53, followed by Rainey in third (3:51.90), and junior Alaeldin Tirba, who just missed his PR mark with a 3:52.10 crossing for fourth in the field.

On the women's side, junior Brianna Belo clocked the best finish out of the nine Eagles who made the trip, placing third in the 1500m run with a final time of 4:38.73.

Purdy, Rainey and Belo will join 25 of their teammates at Navy's Ingram Field on Saturday.  Rainey will line up for yet another 1500m run alongside Tirba and sophomores Ben Doiron and Tommy Sommer.

Purdy will make the jump down to the 800m, returning to the event for the first time since his Patriot League title run during the indoor season.  He will be joined on the line by junior Jim Belfatto and freshmen Gerard D'Ambrosio III and Justin Dignan.

Sophomore Trevor Patton, who placed eighth in the long jump last weekend, will be back on the runway this weekend to continue the pursuit for his third school record.  Patton, who owns the top marks in AU history for the indoor long and triple jumps, currently sits at No. 3 on the outdoor long jump list with his 6.83m (22-5) PR from the 2016 season.

On the women's side, Belo will also bump down to the 800m, where she will be joined by sophomore Kassidy Ayres, junior Jude Mabone, and freshmen Arianna Lopez and Emily Houghton.  Belo currently holds the school record in the event with her 2:08.23 PR from the 2015 Patriot League Outdoor Championship meet.

Other names to look out for on the women's side includes the pairing of sophomore Adriana Hooks and freshman Arianna Lopez in the 1500m run and sophomore Grace Goulding in the high jump.
