FAIRFAX, Va. - Juniors Brianna Belo and Alaeldin Tirba closed January with yet another set of individual victories to highlight the American University track & field team's performances at the Patriot Games, hosted by George Mason on Saturday, Jan. 28.
Belo just missed on her 500m dash school record mark (1:14.46) with a 1:15.58 crossing to lead the 11-woman field. She is now 3-of-4 for individual victories this season after she placed first in the 800m runs at the Terrapin Invitational and Navy Mid-Week Meet. Her only loss of the season came at the Navy Lid Lifter in December, where she crossed in second over 800m in 2:16.81.
Sophomore Sammie Paul joined her on the line on Saturday and crossed in sixth overall with a final time of 1:25.24.
On the men's side, Tirba led a 1-2-3 effort from the Eagles in the mile, finishing with a season's best 4:16.04 to lead the 48-man field. Junior Liam Purdy was close behind in 4:18.51 for second overall, followed by a PR effort from sophomore Ben Doiron, who crossed in 4:18.64 for third.
In the women's 1000m run, freshman Arianna Lopez added her name to the AU record book with the No. 7 time in school history, crossing in 3:01.68 for tenth in the field. Sophomore Adriana Hooks and freshman Kaitlyn McTernan were close behind in 11th and 12th overall.
The Eagles will be back on Friday, Feb. 3, with a trip down to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Camel City Invitational. For the latest on AU Track & Field, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_TrackXC.
