Track & Field Clinches Event Wins at Terrapin Invitational

HYATTSVILLE, Md. - The American University men's and women's track and field team faced its first big meet of the indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 21, traveling to Hyattsville, Md., for the Terrapin Invitational.

Three Eagles came away from the meet with individual wins, including a personal record (PR) performance from junior Liam Purdy in the 800m run (1:55.02).

Junior Alaeldin Tirba also clocked through with a top three finish in his field, as he made his season debut in the mile with a second-place crossing in 4:17.07.  Sophomore Ben Doiron crossed close behing in eighth overall with a new PR time of 4:25.61.

In the field events, sophomore Trevor Patton returned to the long jump runway to put up a new season-best mark of 6.66m (21-10.25), good for fifth in the field.  Patton owns the school record in the event with his 6.71m (22-0.25) PR.

The women made a quick turnaround after Thursday's Navy Midweek Invitational, with nine of the ten Eagles competing for the second time in three days.  Junior Brianna Belo and sophomore Adriana Hooks highlighted the day's events with a pair of event wins.

Belo dominated the 800m field for the majority of the race before Maryland's Catherine Voelpel closed the gap in the last 50m.  But Belo was able to hold Voelpel at bay, securing the win by .02-seconds with a 2:16.25 crossing.

Hooks closed out the day's individual events with another dominating victory, gapping the rest of the field early in the race.  Although George Washington's Halley Brown slowly made up ground, Hooks still secured the win by 2-seconds with a 10:11.77 performance.

The Eagles will return to the track on Jan. 27-28 for the Patriot Games, hosted by George Mason, and the Navy Invitational.  For the latest on American Track & Field, stay tuned to and follow the team on Twitter @AU_TrackXC.
