WASHINGTON - The American University track & field team is back in action on Saturday, heading to the Terrapin Invitational, hosted by Maryland at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Center in Landover, Md. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the long jump, high jump and women's 5000m, and will conclude at 4:50 with the men's 4x400m relay.
ABOUT THE MEET
This is the first time this season that both the men and women of American University Track & Field will be featured in a meet, after they split between a set of meets at Navy to kick off the season. They will join fellow-Patriot League foe, Loyola Maryland, along with severall nonconference programs.
Both the men and women enter the weekend's competition with a pair of meets already under their belts. The women got the 2016-17 slate underway on Dec. 1 with the Navy Lid Lifter Meet, followed by the men's Navy Invitational on Dec. 3. The teams put in another couple of meets at Navy earlier this month with the Navy Invitational on Jan. 14 (men) and the Navy Mid-Week Meet on Jan. 19 (women).
Junior Brianna Belo highlighted the events for the Eagles at the Navy Mid-Week Meet, winning the 800m field with the second-fastest time in program history - 2:13.96.
Belo will return to the 800m on Saturday, and will be joined by sophomore Chia-ry Chang Urena and freshman Grace Parke.
Freshman Arianna Lopez and sophomore Grace Goulding also enter the weekend after personal record (PR) performances. Both finished second overall in their respective events on Thursday, Jan. 19, with Lopez timing through in 5:10.83 in the mile while Goulding cleared 1.60m (5-3) in the high jump.
Lopez will retake the line in the mile, along with freshman Katelyn Deibler, freshman Kaitlyn McTernan and senior Corina Velazco.
Goulding will be one of two field event athletes for the Eagles, along with sophomore Trevor Patton in the men's long jump. Patton currently owns the school record in the event with his freshman PR - 6.71m (22-0.25).
Also highlighting the men's field is junior Alaeldin Tirba, who timed through with a new PR in the 3000m on Jan. 14 with his 8:22.09 winning run. He will drop down to the mile on Saturday, along with senior Jim Belfatto, and sophomores Ben Doiron and Chandler Ross.
Junior Liam Purdy, who ranks eighth in the AU record books for the 1000m run (2:28.27), will be featured in the 800m field alongside sophomore Matthew Rainey, and freshmen Faolan Coogan-Puck and Justin Dignan.
