Personal Records Highlight Navy Midweek Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The American University women's track team kicked off its 2017 slate on Thursday, Jan. 19, with a trip to Annapolis for the Navy Midweek Invitational.  There, the Eagles matched up against a pair of fellow-Patriot League foes, Navy and Loyola Maryland, along with two nonconference programs with Temple and Morgan State.  Of the ten women who competed for the red, white and blue, three came away with new personal records (PR's), and one earned herself a new spot in the program's history books.

Sophomore Grace Goulding got events rolling for AU with the women's high jump, where she extended her indoor PR from 1.55m (5-1) to 1.60m (5-3) to land in second overall.

Senior Corina Velazco got events rolling on the track, as she took the line with freshmen Katelyn Deibler, Arianna Lopez and Kaitlyn McTernan for the mile.  Lopez led on and off for the majority of the race, trading positions with Temple's Katie Leisher until crossing in PR fashion for second (5:10.83).  McTernan and Velazco followed close behind in third and fourth, respectively, while Deibler crossed in sixth.

Junior Brianna Belo followed with a PR of her own, winning the 800m with the second-fastest time in program history - 2:13.96.  This was the second consecutive PR for Belo, who kicked off her junior campaign in December with a 2:16.81 best at the Navy Women's Lid-Lifter Meet.  She now sits just over a second off of Zaia Wharton's 2:12.80 school record from 2005.

Sophomore Adriana Hooks closed out the top-three finishes for the Eagles, crossing third in the 3000m field with a time of 10:08.36.  Sophomore Kailee Traficante followed in seventh overall.

The Eagles will make a quick turnaround, returning to the track on Saturday, Jan. 21, for the Terrapin Invitational, hosted by Maryland at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.  For the latest on American Track & Field, stay tuned to and follow the team on Twitter @AU_TrackXC.
