WASHINGTON - After the American University track & field men kicked off their 2017 schedule on Saturday, it is now the women's turn to take the track. Fourteen Eagles will travel to Annapolis, Md., on Thursday for the women-only Navy Mid-Week Invitational, set to begin at 4:15 p.m. in the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
The Navy Mid-Week Invitational will feature two fellow-Patriot League foes in Navy and Loyola Maryland, along with a pair of nonconference competitors with Morgan State and Temple.
While this is the first meet of the 2017 slate, it is the second of the 2016-17 indoor season, after the Eagles made their first of three trips to Navy on Thursday, Dec. 1, for the Navy Lid Lifter. All eight AU women will make their return to the Navy track this week, including junior Brianna Belo, who kicked off her junior campaign with a new personal record (PR) and No. 3 All-Time mark in the 800m run (2:16.81).
Belo will line up for the 800m once again on Thursday, alongside teammates sophomore Sammie Paul and sophomore Chia-Ry Chang Urena.
A pair of All-Time Top Ten members will also take to the track in the 3000m run with sophomore Adriana Hooks and sophomore Kassidy Ayres. Hooks currently ranks fifth in program history with her 9:53.05 PR from 2016 while Ayres sits at No. 8 with her 10:03.76 from the first meet of the 2015-16 season.
Corina Velazco, the lone senior on the women's squad, will be featured in the mile alongside freshman Katelyn Deibler, freshman Arianna Lopez and freshman Kaitlyn McTernan. Lopez is coming off of an exciting debut cross country season, which culminated in a 28th-place finish at the Patriot League Championships.
Grace Goulding will be the lone competitor in the field events on Thursday, as she is set to kick off her sophomore campaign in the high jump.
