Track and Field Set for First Meet of 2017

WASHINGTON - The American University men's track and field team is kicking off the 2017 indoor schedule this weekend, as they head to Navy on Saturday, Jan. 14, for the Navy Winter Invitational.  Events at the Wesley A. Brown Field House will begin for the Eagles at noon with the long jump, and will conclude at 2:45 p.m. with the 4x400m relay.

American is one of four teams scheduled to compete on Saturday.  This weekend will serve as an early-season look at fellow-Patriot League foe, Navy, as well as a couple of non-conference schools with UMES and Mount St. Mary's also set to appear.

Of the 12 Tigers entered in Saturday's events, six will be making their season debuts after several AU athletes got an early start on the season at the Dec. 3 Navy Invitational.  Among those kicking off their indoor slate is sophomore long jump specialist, Trevor Patton.

Patton closed his exciting freshman season with the indoor school record in the long jump, 22-0.25, and the No. 3 mark in program history for the event during the outdoor season (22-5).  He also owns the school record for the indoor triple jump with his 41-8.75 personal record (PR).

Senior Brendan Johnson is the only other individual All-Time Top Ten athlete scheduled to take the line this weekend.  He currently sits at No. 3 All-Time for the indoor 5000m, but will be making his senior debut in the 3000m run on Saturday.

Freshman Gerard D'Ambrosio, juniors Jim Belfatto and Alaeldin Tirba, and sophomores Chandler Ross, Matthew Rainey and Ben Doiron will be making their return to the track after they kicked off their seasons last month at the Navy Invitational.
