Track & Field Kicks Off Indoor Season

WASHINGTON – The American University track & field team kicked off its season last week, traveling to Navy for a pair of meets.  The women were up first with the Navy Lid Lifter on Thursday, Dec. 1, followed by the men on Saturday, Dec. 3, with the Navy Invitational.

Junior Brianna Belo highlighted the Lid Lifter results with a second-place finish in the 800m run, crossing with a new personal record (PR) of 2:16.81.  Her previous PR of 2:17.06 put her at No. 3 in AU history for the event, a position she will retain despite timing through with a new career best.  Erin Koch currently sits at No. 2 with her 2:14.56 from 2010, and Zaia Wharton has held the 800m school record, 2:12.80, since 2005.

Sophomore Kailee Traficante also kicked her season off with a new PR, crossing in 11:02.39 in the 3000m run to take 13th in the field.  Sophomore Adriana Hooks led the way for the women in the 3000m, finishing in sixth overall (10:11.71).  Hooks is coming off an exciting cross country season, which culminated with a top ten finish at the Patriot League Championships.  She led the Eagles throughout the season, hitting new PR's in the 5000m (18:10.0) and 6000m (21:58.20).

On the men's side, junior Alaeldin Tirba notched a first-place finish in the 3000m run, crossing in 9:09.48.

The Eagles will return to action after the New Year, traveling back to Annapolis for the Navy Mid-Week Meet on Jan. 19.  For the latest on AU Track & Field, stay tuned to and follow the team on Twitter @AU_TrackXC.
