RIO DE JANEIRO – Matthew Centrowitz of Team USA finished third in his heat of the men's 1,500-meter run Thursday and advanced to Saturday's final at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Centrowitz, the son of AU head track and cross country coach Matt Centrowitz, ran 3:39.61 to place third, with the top five finishers in each of two semifinals and the two next-fastest times moving on to the final on Saturday, to be run at 8 p.m. EDT.
The top five finishers in his tightly contested heat finished within a second, with the top nine finishers packed within 1.5 seconds. Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya won the semifinal in 3:39.42.
To put the times in context, Centrowitz posted a mark of 3:34.09 to set a meet record and win the U.S. Olympic Trials a month ago.
