WASHINGTON – It's turning into quite the spring for Brendan Johnson. Seemingly every time he competes during the 2016 outdoor track season, he's posting a personal record, earning a qualifying mark or hitting the tape first in a race.
Fresh from a career-best 14:20.86 in the men's 5,000-meter run at last week's Penn Relays, Johnson has earned the selection as this week's GEICO – AU Student-Athlete of the Week.
The junior from Waldorf, Md., won his heat in the 5,000 and placed 18th overall by cutting nine seconds off his previous career-best.
He came in 24 seconds below the IC4A standard, marking the third event this season in which he's earned an invitation to the IC4A Outdoor Championships. He already has qualifying marks in the 1,500 (3:53.55) and 10,000 (29:41.51).
Johnson, who has won three GEICO weekly awards this season, is now among the top three in the Patriot League in the 5,000 and still holds the fastest 10,000-meter time in the league. His 10K mark from the Raleigh Relays in late March still stands as the best so far among PL runners.
His momentum will carry him and the rest of the Eagles into this weekend's Patriot League Outdoor Championships, to be held Friday and Saturday at Bucknell.
