PHILADELPHIA – Brendan Johnson won his heat of the men's 5,000-meter run and posted a qualifying mark for the IC4A Outdoor Championships to highlight American University performances at the prestigious Penn Relays.
Johnson went 14:20.86, trimming 40 seconds off his previous season-best and nine seconds off his personal record outdoors in the 5K. His mark ranks third in the Patriot League so far this season with the PL Outdoor looming next weekend.
The Eagle junior earned an IC4A-qualifying mark in the third event of the outdoor season, already hitting the standard in the 1,500 and 10,000.
Also on Thursday, American's women's distance medley relay team of Adriana Hooks, Anike Oladeji, Brianna Belo and Kelseagh Budris finished ninth overall in 12:00.89. The mark ranks second all-time at AU and was just short of the school record of 11:58.73 set in 2005.
On Saturday, American was sixth in the men's 4x800 relay, as Jim Belfatto, Matthew Rainey, Ben Doiron and Alaeldin Tirba ran 7:37.57. The mark was also an IC4A-qualifying time and was 16 seconds better than AU's previous season-best.
American will compete next Friday and Saturday at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, hosted by Bucknell.
