Johnson Runs to GEICO - AU Student-Athlete of the Week Honor

WASHINGTONBrendan Johnson took advantage of an outstanding field of collegiate distance runners to post a strong time in the men's 10,000-meter run Friday at the Raleigh Relays, earning him the honor as the GEICO – AU Student-Athlete of the Week.

Johnson also was selected Monday as the Corvias Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week.

The junior from Waldorf, Md., finished 17th in a time of 29:41.51, the second-fastest time ever at AU. The national-class field included runners from North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State, Louisville and Florida.

Johnson's mark was 25 seconds ahead of the other six Patriot League runners in the Raleigh field and would have topped the PL Championship Meet record by 15 seconds.

He also ranks 15th currently in the NCAA East Regional standings, with the top 48 individuals in the region qualifying for the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Nationals in May.

In the AU record book, his time ranks behind only the 29:30.97 set by Mark Leininger in 2013.

Johnson's GEICO selection is his second of this academic year, as he was also chosen after a stellar 5K race during the indoor season.

American is scheduled to compete this weekend at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.
