Ellis Rallies for Strong Finish at NCAAs

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Rallying well from being seeded 46th, Josh Ellis of American University came within an eyelash of his personal-best time to finish 27th in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday at the NCAA East Preliminary Outdoor Track and Field meet.

Ellis, an Eagle junior, ran 8:58.69 to finish 11th in the third of three heats. The top three finishers in each heat plus the next fastest three times comprised the 12 student-athletes to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Ore., on June 10 to 13.

Zak Seddon of Florida State (8:34.84), Mason Ferlic of Michigan (8:35.45) and Jackson Neff of Ohio State (8:36.88) earned the three automatic qualifying spots from Ellis' heat and posted the three fastest times in the entire field, which drew 45 runners to the starting line.

Ellis set a school record with his final run of the regular season, going 8:58.68 at the Swarthmore College Final Qualifier. He snapped a mark that had held at AU for 42 years.

He earned second team All-Patriot League honors with his runner-up finish at the PL Outdoor Championships, and has earned distinction in the classroom as a Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-Patriot League selection.
