On a weekend when nearly every American University male student-athlete had a hand in scoring at the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Josh Ellis ended up as the Eagles’ leading scorer.
And those eight points gained with his runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase have earned the junior from Austin, Texas, the selection as GEICO – AU Student-Athlete of the Week.
American finished with 25 points to place seventh at the league championships, despite sending only eight men to the meet. On a weekend with strong performances from the entire team, Ellis’ second-place finish also earned him second team All-Patriot League honors.
Seeded second in the steeplechase coming into the meet, Ellis ran his career-best in the event at 9:00.38. He was out-kicked by Army’s Thomas Girardot, who crossed the line 0.27 seconds ahead.
Ellis was also less than a second off AU’s steeplechase school record that has stood for 42 years. David Reinhart went 8:59.44 in 1973 to post one of the longest-standing records in school history.
Ellis and the Eagles are scheduled to compete next in the Swarthmore Last-Chance Meet on May 11.
