The American University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened their 2011 seasons over the weekend with strong showings in the 3,000 meter run at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Colin Eustis placed first in the men's 3,000, leading the Eagles as they took each of the top six spots. Eustis' time of 8:30.58 put him just over one second ahead of teammate Jeff Brannigan, who took second in 8:31.83 which now ranks as the eighth fastest time in school history. Craig Brown finished third in 8:35.20 while Josh Olsen (8:41.08), Mark Leininger (8:43.23) and John Pope (8:49.20) placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the women's 3,000, Erin Koch ran to a second-place finish with a time of 9:40.57, the second fastest time in school history. She was followed by Ali Tyburski in third place who posted the sixth fastest time in program history with a 10:22.34. Julia Sullivan (10:51.57) and Carly Birkhold (10:53.76) also competed in the event, taking 12th and 13th place, respectively.
The men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will return to action March 25-26 when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh relays.
