Carlstrom, MacAdie Named Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year

The Patriot League on Monday named Pat MacAdie the 2003 Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

WASHINGTON - American University cross country athletes Keira Carlstrom (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and Patrick MacAdie (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) have been named the Patriot League women's and men's Cross County Scholar Athlete of the Year, league officials announced Monday.

A scholar-athlete nominee must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. The winners are selected in a vote of the League's sports information directors.

Keira Carlstrom earned the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete award with a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

Carlstrom is coming off a fall Cross Country season in which she was named PL Runner of the Week two times. She capped the fall season by placing 16th at the NCAA Championship Meet, earning All-America honors. The 16th-place finish was the best finish ever by a Patriot League female runner. She was American's top finisher in every cross country race in the 2003 season. Carlstrom set a personal best for a 5k event at the Maryland Invitational on Oct. 11, 2003, when she finished in first in a time of 17:37.42. In all, she won three of the five races in which she was entered, including the Patriot League Championship Meet. Her win at the Patriot League title meet helped the Eagles capture their second consecutive league team title.

Carlstrom, a sophomore mathematics major, has compiled a 3.50 cumulative grade point average while at American University, including a 3.62 GPA in the fall 2003 semester. She has been named to AU's Dean's List twice, in fall 2002 and fall 2003, and is a member of the Math Club.

MacAdie, a junior, had his best cross country season in fall 2003. MacAdie made the most of the three races in which he competed, finishing fourth at the Maryland Invitational with a time of 24:55.31. He followed that performance up by being named the Patriot League Runner of the Meet in the league championship by winning the race in a time of 25:18.8. That time was just six seconds off his personal best, set in 2002 at the Paul Short Invitational. In addition, Pat was named All-Region for his 12th-place performance at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals.

A communications major, MacAdie boasts a 3.64 cumulative grade point average. He has been named to AU's Dean's List all six semesters, and is a six-time member of the Patriot League Honor Roll.
