Sean Duffy ran excellent leadoff legs for both the distance medley relay and the 4xMile at Penn Relays.
WASHINGTON - American University freshman Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) today as Men's Track Athlete of the Week following his performance at the prestigious Penn Relays.
Duffy ran two relays for the Eagles last weekend. In the distance medley relay, he ran the leadoff leg of 1,200-meters. Running with the pack for the first two laps, Duffy made a strong move on the final lap and pulled away from the field, handing the baton off with a two-second lead. The team went on to win its heat in the race as Duffy ran 2:57.17 for his leg.
Duffy also ran the leadoff leg for the 4 x Mile team that placed seventh in the Championship of America. Duffy handed the baton off in a virtual tie for fifth as he ran 4:09.3 for his leg as he ran against some of the top runners in the country from Arkansas, Stanford and Villanova.
Duffy and the rest of the men's and women's track team returns to action this weekend at the Patriot League Championships. Competition begins at 3:00 on Friday and 11:00 on Saturday.
American University is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women's sports and nine for men.
