Sept. 18, 2007

WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams participated in the Sprint for the Cure 5K in Georgetown over the weekend, helping to raise money for the Washington Cancer Center. This is the third year that the swimming and diving teams have participated in the race.

As part of their annual fall volunteering project, the teams raised just over $800 for cancer research at the event.

"This event is something that we as a team really look forward to each year," Head Coach Mark Davin said. "It is a great chance for us to come together with members of the community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. We received numerous compliments for our enthusiasm and our support of all the runners in the race and appreciate all the kind words that were passed our way."

Sophomores Michael DiDonato (Massapequa, N.Y./Chaminade) and Gabriela Feibel (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor South) were the Eagles top finishers in the race. DiDonato finished fifth among the males and Feibel finishing third among females.

AU placed four other males in the top 20, including freshman John Walters (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West), sophomores Jonathan Bateman (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) and Dan Nagelberg (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and senior Joe Coronato (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan). On the women's side, Feibel was joined by freshman Shannon Cummings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin), sophomores Michelle Holleran (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and Paige Romer (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and seniors Jessica Reinhardt (Riverside, R.I./St. Mary Academy) and Meghan Thiel (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) among the races top 15 finishers.
