AU Swimming and Diving Teams Compete at 2008 Patriot Invitational

WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams were both in action this weekend at the 2008 Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason University. The Eagles performance at the three-day event was highlighted by a new meet record set by Dorothy Isaacs in the 100 breast on day two along with 11 top-eight individual finishes throughout the weekend.

"I am very pleased with how well our teams swam this weekend," Head Coach Mark Davin said. "We had several individuals who swam their way onto our all-time top-10 list and several individuals who improved their lifetime bests. This was a very good weekend for us."

On Day one of the Patriot Invitational the women's team earned three individual top-eight performances and posted a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Isaacs took home a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 IM and 50 free with times of 2:08.27 and 23.94, respectively. Alexandra Wessel also recorded a top-eight finish as she placed seventh in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.33. The women's 200 freestyle relay team of Isaacs, Wessel, Ellinor Shetter and Julia Anstadt placed sixth with a final time of 1:39.62. The men's team was led by Brian Glam on day one as he took 10th place in the 50 free in 21.50.

Day two saw more top performances from the Eagles' women's team, including a new meet record set by Isaacs in the 100 breast. The sophomore completed the course in 1:03.06 to set the new mark and bested the second-place finisher by nearly two full seconds. Mary-Margaret Lopez turned in a fifth-place performance in the 100 fly as she clocked in at 58.34. Wessel topped her seventh-place finish in the 500 free from the day before with a sixth-place showing in the 200 free in 1:54.74. Matt Pelletier led the men's team on the second day, placing second in the 100 back with a time of 51.57. Pelletier also posted a time of 52.15 in the 100 fly to place 11th.

It was a familiar pair on day three which led the women's team. Isaacs posted her fourth top-eight finish of the weekend as she placed third in the 100 free, clocking in at 52.08. Wessel was also among the leaders on Sunday as she placed seventh in the 200 back in 2:10.56. Eleanor Clay also had a strong showing on the final day of competition, placing sixth in the 200 back in 2:28.02. Pelletier once again led the men's team with a sixth-place finish in the 200 back in a time of 1:54.09.

The women's team placed seventh overall in the team scoring with 267 points. The men's team finished eighth with 108.5 points.
